Domestic insurance

House insurance

The Christchurch earthquakes changed the way insurance companies rate houses and policy covers have changed dramatically. Reinsurance companies have demanded these changes be put in place to continue to give us cover. The previous covers that gave you total replacement without a sum insured, have changed to a sum insured only. This is the maximum liability of the insurance company.

Before insuring your house, visit www.need2know.org or use the Cordell calculator. These sites will give you an indication of how much your house should be insured for. There are now limitations on some major items, like swimming pools, retaining walls - so you will need to ensure that the valuation includes these items. Also, carpets now form part of the policy. For a more precise value, engage a registered valuer. Once you have the value, we can give you a quotation for insurance cover.

Contents insurance

Under insurance was a major problem for household covers after the Christchurch earthquakes. You should insure your for their full value. Most policies have replacement covers on some household items. This needs to be taken into account when valuing your contents. Also, items of high value or items like paintings and antiques should be valued.  Most policies do not require this, but if you need to prove your loss, this is of great assistance.

This policy covers your household contents and personal effects. Again, the maximum liability is the sum insured, so a valuation guide will give you an idea on the amount of cover you require. There are limitations on jewelry, photographic equipment, sporting equipment and maximum amounts payable on some items. Speak to your broker about the limitations.
